The Two Brothers, written by Sakeena Sheikh (12)

14Oct 2022

My name is Sakeena Sheikh and today I will be talking about the relationship between Imam Hussain (as) and Hazrat Abbas. It is important we remember the people of Karbala and the relationships they had with their family, friends, and companions so that we may strive to be like them.

The connection Imam Hussain and Hazrat Abbas had is especially important. The brothers who did not share the same mother but shared the bravery of their valiant and courageous father, Imam Ali (as).

On the Day of Ashura, the earth was cold, distant and sorrowful. Our beloved third Imam (Imam Hussain (as)), his companions and family were all brutally martyred on the plains of Karbala.

Hazrat Abbas went to retrieve water for the thirsty children as the army of Yazid had cut off water for Imam Hussain’s camp. When Hazrat Abbas reacher River Euphrates, he put some water between his two hands, he had the choice to drink the water, however he told himself he would not have a single drop unless Mawla Hussain would drink the water. He said, “How can I drink water when Mawla Hussain and his family are thirsty?”
He put the water back in the river and filled the Mashk (water skin).

I would really like to emphasise this point because it shows just how much respect and love Hazrat Abbas has for Imam Hussain (as) that he cannot even drink water knowing that his brother is thirsty. This also shows how patient he is, and he is willing to sacrifice anything for Allah and his Prophet’s grandson.

We should aspire to become like the Ahlulbayt and learn from their great legacies. They have left behind so many great lessons we can all learn from. We should try to be patient and brave like Hazrat Abbas, the shining moon of the Hashmi clan, and as kind and compassionate a Bibi Sakeena, the precious pearl of Imam Hussain (as).
